Lesson Plan for Year 3 - Science - Plants and Growth

Lesson Plan: Plants and Growth (Year 3, Science) Title: Understanding Plant Growth Grade Level: Year 3 Duration: 60 minutes Subject: Science Topic: Plants and Growth Objectives: - Students will understand the basic parts and functions of plants. - Students will learn the essentials plants need to grow (sunlight, water, air, soil). - Students will observe and record the growth of a plant over time. Materials: - Chart paper and markers - Seed packets (e.g., beans or sunflowers) - Small plant pots or recycled containers - Potting soil - Watering can or spray bottle - Journals for recording observations - Magnifying glasses (optional) - Pictures/diagrams of plant parts (roots, stem, leaves, flowers) Introduction (10 minutes): 1. Begin with a brief discussion about what students already know about plants and plant growth. 2. Show different pictures of plants and ask students to name some parts they recognize. 3. Introduce the key vocabulary: roots, stem, leaves, flowers. Direct Instruction (15 minutes): 1. Use a large chart or whiteboard to draw and label the parts of a plant. 2. Explain the primary functions of each part of the plant: - Roots: Absorb water and nutrients from the soil. - Stem: Supports the plant and transports water and nutrients. - Leaves: Produce food for the plant through photosynthesis. - Flowers: Reproduce and form seeds. 3. Discuss the four main things plants need to grow: sunlight, water, air, soil. 4. Ask students why they think each of these elements is important for plant growth. Activity (25 minutes): 1. Distribute plant pots or containers, soil, and seed packets to each student. 2. Instruct students on how to plant their seeds properly: - Fill the pots with soil. - Make a small hole in the soil with their finger. - Place the seed in the hole and cover it with soil. - Water the soil gently. 3. Allow the students to label their plant pots with their names and the date. 4. Discuss the need to observe and care for the plants daily. 5. Hand out journals and explain that students will record their observations of the plant’s growth in the journal daily or weekly. Class Discussion and Wrap-Up (10 minutes): 1. Gather the students and ask them to explain what they did during the planting activity. 2. Encourage students to share their predictions about what will happen to their seeds over time. 3. Recap what plants need to grow and the functions of the plant parts. 4. Highlight the importance of caring for the plant and making regular observations. Assessment: - Observational assessment during the plant-planting activity. - Informal questioning during the lesson to check for understanding. - Review the students’ journals periodically to assess their understanding of plant growth and their observation skills. Extension Activities: - Create a class garden outside or in the classroom. - Visit a local botanical garden or park. - Conduct experiments to test the effects of different variables (e.g., light, water) on plant growth. Homework/Enrichment: - Have students research a specific plant and present interesting facts about it to the class. - Encourage students to grow a variety of plants at home and share their findings with the class. Note to Teacher: Ensure to water the plants regularly with the help of students and provide necessary adjustments if some plants are not growing well. Use this as a learning opportunity to discuss changes in the environment or care routine needed for plant health.
